Why the Smart Roadster Is Not a Standard OBD2 Car
The Smart Roadster 452 was produced between 2003 and 2006, straddling the transition period before the European Union mandated full EOBD compliance on all petrol passenger cars from January 2001 onwards. In theory, the Roadster should be fully EOBD compliant. In practice, Smart implemented diagnostics primarily through the proprietary Mercedes-Benz DAS and STAR system, and the standardised OBD2 Mode 01–09 service data is only partially exposed on the 16-pin OBD2 port beneath the dashboard.
The Bosch MEG 1.1 ECU — the brain of the 698cc turbocharged three-cylinder — communicates over the ISO 9141-2 and KWP2000 (ISO 14230) slow-init protocols rather than the faster CAN bus used on modern vehicles.
